We operate extensive XR research in our specialized labs and teams.

We focus on leveraging cutting-edge IT and technology research trends including XR (eXtended Reality), AI or crowdsourcing at transdisciplinary intersections with neuroscience, engineering, design, live sciences, social sciences and humanities and more!

Research Areas
and Technologies  


The key focus of XRC's research area are advanced immersive systems embedded in the broadly understood Mixed Reality Continuum, including Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and eXtended Reality (XR), combined with the latest trends and innovations in the field of data-driven IT applications, such as Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), coupled with non-standard interfaces, such as Voice User Interface (VUI), as well as acquisition, processing and analysis of multimodal data, including psychophysiological data, such as eye-tracking and pupillometry (ET), electroencephalography (EEG) and peripheral psychophysiology (e.g. GSR/EDA, ECG/PPG).

  

Our research focuses on various aspects of applied computer science including. The scope of our research is broad, including:

 
  • New interfaces and interaction modalities between human and technology
  • eXtended Reality Continuum: XR, VR, AR, MR, VUI
  • Data-driven research: multimodal data, ML, AI, process automation
  • Recent trends: Smart Home, Smart Cities, Citizen Science, Space Exploration, Robotic Process Automation, Industry 4.0

XR Center Labs


The XR Center team is truly transdisciplinary. Although the core of XR-based systems are covered by XR Department, we gather various specialists form different departments of the Faculty of Computer Science Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology, as well as other Faculties and Departments, including New Media Art and Information Management.


XR Center consist of several labs and working groups, including:

  • Immersive Environments’ Content Lab (head Rafał Masłyk, XR Department)

  • Data Science Lab (head Piotr Gago, Data Bases Department and Information Management Faculty)
  • AI & Computer Vision Lab (head Jagoda Lazarek, XR Department)
  • Machine Learning and Automation Lab (head Maciej Grzeszczuk, XR Department)
  • Participatory Design and Citizen Science Lab (head Kinga Skorupska, XR Department)

We have also teams and labs devoted to transdisciplinary projects, including: Space Lab, Volterra Lab, Crowd Lynx Lab (see collaboration network section).

Research Projects and Publications


XRC's projects and publications of their outcomes are not limited to the core technologies that we use in our XR-continuum systems, that is VR/AR/XR. Thanks to the data-driven approach in our projects we make use of the latest trends and advancements in the industry, in particular ML and AI, including Generative AI, as well as IoT and Smart Environments, Spaces and Buildings, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Complex Event Processing or Industry 4.0. In our project we also focuse on non-standard interfaces, such as Voice User Interface (VUI), Electromyography (EMG) and Electro-oculography (EOG), Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), as well as acquisition, processing and analysis of multimodal data, including psychophysiological data, such as eye-tracking and pupillometry (ET), electroencephalography (EEG) and peripheral psychophysiology(e.g. GSR/EDA, ECG/PPG).


Over several years we took part in dozens of projects, including projects from our research network, from Robotic Process Automation to VAPE (Virtual Air Pollution Experience).


We have published dozens of scientific publications in top notch conferences, including A* like ISMAR or CHI.
